Welcome!
Windham County Reads
is dedicated to bringing families and books
together and inspiring people of all ages to become lifetime readers.
We envision a fully literate Windham County, with all of our communities affirming the joys and importance of reading for every stage of life:
- Parents reading daily with their young children,
- Children entering school prepared to learn and enjoying books throughout the year,
- Teens using books to define and pursue their dreams, and
- Adults reading for pleasure and information throughout their lives.
Our History
Windham County Reads was formed in the fall of 1988 in response to a call from the Library of Congress to develop community partnerships that address the literacy crisis evident in the lives of many young families. Founded by the late Betsey H. Bonin, a passionate advocate for children, education, and literacy, we create and carry out a variety of family literacy programs, many of which have been replicated in other parts of Vermont and New England.
About Us
We work in partnership with schools, libraries, human service organizations, area businesses and a diverse group of individuals to improve younger children's reading readiness and school success, inspire older students to strengthen their literacy skills, and educate parents about the value of family reading. Our efforts have received recognition from Selectboards, the State Legislature, former Governor Howard Dean and Vermont's congressional delegation. In 1999 Windham County Reads was the recipient of the S. Whitney Landon Memorial Award "for exceptional service to Vermont children."
